Making Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt

“There was always some little delicacy, very special and good—foie gras or a tossed salad, pastry bought at Lang’s Bakery just across Main Street. “

East of Eden, John Steinbeck

Inspiration

Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt is a tangy alternative to calorie busting ice cream. Real ice cream is made with cream, it’s impossible to resist. Cream has a whopping 821 calories per cup, while whole milk yogurt has 170 calories per cup, a compelling reason to try this recipe for Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt. This super easy recipe for frozen yogurt has floated all over the net. For vanilla frozen yogurt there are only four ingredients, full fat yogurt, sugar, vanilla and salt. Mix everything in one bowl, process, freeze, done. No custard to make and chill, no overloading on fat filled calories from dairy. A summer worthy frozen dessert, Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt is slightly tangy from the yogurt, minty from the extract and chocolaty from the mini chips.

Essentials

This is the perfect recipe to use a bowl with a pouring spout and handle, known as a batter bowl. Mixing the Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt in a batter bowl makes for easy poring into the ice cream maker and fast clean up. Take care with the mint extract, it’s powerful. Its easy to use too much. I’m not convinced all brands of mint extract share the same intensity. Taste test the Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt when it’s almost done processing. Let the taste linger before deciding to add a few more drops of extract. The flavors deserve harmony—tangy yogurt, mint and chocolate. A few drops of green food coloring can be added too. Another option is fancy chocolate shards instead of mini chocolate chips. I’m too summer busy to chop chocolate, mini chips are just fabulous.

Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt

Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt, adapted from Food 52
28 oz full fat yogurt, chilled (not Greek Style)
1C sugar
1t vanilla extract
1/2t mint extract
1/4t fine grain sea salt
1/2C mini chocolate chips
  1. Whisk together the yogurt, sugar, extracts and salt. For easy poring and clean up, use a batter bowl, a large bowl with a pouring spout and handle. Mix throughly, until the grains of sugar melt into the yogurt.
  2. Process the yogurt mixture according to the ice cream maker’s instructions. Mine takes 20 minutes. Just before stopping the machine, sprinkle in the mini chocolate chips and mix into the frozen yogurt. Scoop into a container and freeze at least four hours before serving.

  1. Great dessert idea . Mint and chocolate is such a good taste combo. Now, this about the 10th time this summer I wished I had an ice cream maker, but didn’t need the calories it would bring. Making frozen yogurt work. Ice cream maker is now on my culinary wish list.

  2. Chocolate and mint play so well together! Love that combo. Haven’t had it in ice cream in years — so now of course you have me craving it. This looks excellent — thanks.

  3. I am a frozen yogurt fan. It doesn’t get much better than mint+chocolate! And and when I see the cream numbers vs. the milk numbers, well . . . if it’s delicious, I’m choosing milk. 🙂 (Also, where did you find those pretty serving bowls?)

    1. Thank you Valentina! I knew cream had more calories than yogurt, but wow. What a difference. (The green bowls are from Target.)

  4. During my Baskin and Robbins years, I always bought mint ice cream. I haven’t had it since because I’m trying to cut back on ice cream. Love the idea of using yogurt and it looks fabulous. Will be given this a try. Thanks Deb!

  5. A perfect frozen treat to enjoy during these balmy warm Southern California evenings. Beautiful photos Deb!
