Blueberry Poppy Seed Brunch Cake

Blueberry Poppy Seed Brunch Cake

A Cake for all the Berries

“Maybe she had stayed in Watsonville. There was Pajaro, and that was the railroad section, and then the Pajaro River and the bridge into Watsonville.”

This recipe was the Pillsbury Bake-Off winner in 1990. Twenty-six years later it’s still fantastic. The Blueberry Poppy Seed Brunch Cake is easy to make and a joy to share. This is a coffee cake than transcends brunch and moves right into dessert territory. An exuberant lemon poppy seed cake gone rogue by making room for a gigantic pile of blueberries. So many blueberries, some barely burst open, other melt into jam and then just before serving more fresh berries are piled on top! And yes the cake is good too. I thought the cake edges might have gotten over-baked, but the slightly crisp edges are reminiscent of a buttery lemon poppy seed scone. The cake is soft and tender, yet sturdy enough to cradle all the berries. READ MORE . . .

Sweet Broccoli with Roasted Lemon and Feta

Almost Spring

“Well, you know the railroads built those fruit cars. I went down and had a look at them. They’re pretty good. Do you know we could ship lettuce right to the east coast in the middle of winter?”

The massive El Nino storms have paused. It has been warm, which feels like spring. I was looking ahead to early spring with the first harvest of local produce when I learned that Tanimura and Antle grows Artisan Sweet Broccoli year round in the Salinas Valley. To grow a perishable commodity like broccoli, year round in the same place is amazing! The day I went to take photos of the Artisan Sweet Broccoli fields in Spreckels, the sun was shining and it felt like spring had already arrived. Next month the harvest of lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and other produce will bring the Salinas Valley alive from it’s short winter slumber. READ MORE . . .

Smashed Beet Salad with Lemon and Pistachio

A Winter Salad

“Charles found that he could cook his fried and boiled meals more quickly and efficiently on the forge than he could on the kitchen stove. The bellows forced quick flaring heat from the coke. A man didn’t have to wait for a stove to heat up. He wondered why he had never thought of it before.”

After those outrageous Lemon Ginger Sweet Rolls it must be time for something vegetables. With this recipe we have all the lemon and our vegetables too. Smashing the roasted beets and then crisping them in a hot skillet until the exteriors are crunchy and the insides stay soft and buttery is the kind of winter cooking I recommend. While hot dress the beets with a citrusy vinaigrette and a dollop of creamy ricotta. Fresh herbs, crunchy pistachios and a flurry of baby lettuce make a fabulous winter salad. READ MORE . . .

A belated Happy New Year! I took a break to enjoy the holidays and I hope you did too. I like to start the New Year with a baking recipe that has been lingering on my must-try list. This not a diet or Whole 30 recipe, just one mighty fine sweet roll recipe. The recipe is adapted from a 3-hole punched page from the November 1973 Family Circle magazine. It arrived in my life with a stack of old, forgotten recipes. The title, “Prize Recipes from Women’s Clubs” told me this is very likely an excellent recipe. In my kitchen, Orange Rolls from the Sunflower Sampler (Oh, what a name!) of Wichita, Kansas became Lemon Ginger Sweet Rolls. Light, super fluffy with the sweet, tart allure of lemon and warmth from candied ginger these marvelous sweet rolls are winter comfort in every bite. Eating one Lemon Ginger Sweet Roll can only be achieved with super human will power. Just serve two and be happy. READ MORE . . .

Finding Summer

“And he lay in the sun warmed sand, counting the waves.”

We’ve been having a coastal heat wave. When it warms to eighty and above we fog dwellers start complaining about the heat. Our houses and wardrobes aren’t equipped. Then and only then, do we speak with pride and reverence about the coastal fog. We wait for the fog to return and drink ice cold drinks to replenish the moisture our bodies crave. We drink lemonade–homemade lemonade with lots of ice and a touch of lavender. READ MORE . . .
